Sparrow, a mail application that started in the Mac App Store and made its way over to the iOS app store, was picked up by Google in an effort to enhance the search engine’s Gmail service.
“The Sparrow team has always put their users first by focusing on building a seamlessly simple and intuitive interface for their email client,” A Google spokesperson emailed to Blorge. “We look forward to bringing them aboard the Gmail team, where they’ll be working on new projects.”
The spokesperson declined to say how much the deal was valued at and what exactly the word “projects” would entail.
Google will continue to support Sparrow’s existing apps and provide critical updates, though they don’t plan to release major new features for those apps. That means don’t expect push notifications coming anytime soon.
According to The Verge, sources said the deal was worth just under $25 million and there wasn’t a bidding war surrounding the purchase. Google hopes to have Sparrow’s team in the main Mountain View campus in California by year’s end.
So why is Google interested in this popular third-party mail app? Well, as the old technology saying goes — “If you can’t beat them, buy them!”
Google wants to bring a sleeker look to its Gmail interface. Let’s face it, the existing Gmail Templates are ugly and amateur looking. Bringing in the expertise from Sparrow can help bring a beauty and an art to all of its Gmail experiences.
The Verge speculates that Google’s Gmail team is working on an email app for the Mac and P.C., a move that would directly compete against Apple’s Mail app.
