In her affidavit that which she submitted to the East District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, complainant Asha Sharma stated that she paid Rs.1,000 to Airtel to avail of the operator's services. Airtel, however, as per the affidavit, did not activate Sharma's mobile connection, despite repeated requests.

We direct opposite party to refund Rs 1,000 to the complainant towards the cost of the SIM along with a compensation of Rs 5,000 for harassment and as litigation charges."
Elaborating further, the report adds that in her complaint, Sharma detailed that she had gone for a new scheme/product by Airtel, called Airtel Money, for which she had paid Rs.1,000 by cheque. Airtel issued her a SIM card, saying that the connection would be activated as soon as the cheque is encashed. As per her complaint, Sharma narrated that Airtel encashed the Rs.1,000 cheque and did not activate her connection as promised.
The report further added that "The forum decided to proceed ex-parte against the telecom major as "in spite of notice sent by registered post, opposite party did not contest the case. The bench also directed Sharma to return the SIM card to Airtel."
