Google Science Fair: Winners tackle breast cancer, hearing loss and water quality
An expectant crowd gathered last night inside an airplane hangar at a
flight school in Palo Alto, California to hear the winners of the
second annual Google Science Fair. The grand prize went to Brittany
Wenger, 17, of Sarasota, Florida, who wrote a computer program to help
doctors diagnose breast cancer less invasively. Jonah Kohn, 14, of San
Diego, Calif. won his age category for creating a device that converts
sound into tactile vibration to improve the music-listening experience
for the hearing impaired; and a trio from Spain won the 15 to 16 age
category for documenting the hazardous and non-hazardous organisms found
in water from different parts of their country.
Blind Mice Can Now See - Thanks To A Chemical Injected In Their Eyes!
Research has romanced eyesight restoration for long now, and if the
latest news is to be believed, this love story did have a happy ending outcome.
A multinational crop of scientists (from UC Berkeley, University of
Munich and the University of Washington) have made some advancements
which offers the easiest and the cheapest way to restore the light
sensitivity of our eyes. A chemical- AAQ
(acrylamide-azobenzene-quaternary ammonium) was injected into the eyes
of blind mice and the results show that their vision has indeed been
restored, though partially. Little quantity of AAQ can cause this effect
for a few hours at a stretch, and is quite uncomplicated and less
extreme than substitutive methods like stem cell therapy or synthetic
implants.

Bugs are creepy. You don't need to be an entomophobe to empathize with that sentiment. But bugs are also inspiring -- to researchers in China, that is. Taking a cue from nature, a team of engineers from the country's School of Chemical Engineering and Technology have devised a microbot weighing just 0.02 lbs (11 grams) that can repeatedly jump across the surface of water without tanking.
New Method Detects Lung Infection in Ancient Mummy
A novel proteomics method revealed that a 500-year-old frozen Incan mummy suffered from a bacterial lung infection at the time of its death, showing evidence of an active pathogenic in an ancient sample for the first time. The full report is published July 25 in the open access journal PLoS ONE. Detecting diseases in ancient remains is often fraught with difficulty, especially because of contamination. Techniques based on microbe DNA can easily be confused by environmental contamination, and they can only confirm that the pathogen was present, not that the person was infected, but the researchers behind the study, led by Angelique Corthals of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, found a way around this problem. They used proteomics, focusing on protein rather than DNA remains, to profile immune system response from degraded samples taken from 500 year-old mummies.
